Old Palace School
Safe I. S. installed and now service the Fire Alarm at one of the Oldest Schools in Britain!
The Old Palace School in Croydon, Surrey. A grade 1 listed school dating back to the 1600's. The Fire system being part radio and part hardwired, was sympathetically installed; close liason with English Heritage and the Building Control Office continued throughout.
The building is noted for its association with John Whitgift and thisbond still remains today. The owner and operator of the building being The Whitgift Foundation.
John Whitgift, The Archbishop of Canterbury (1583-1004) founded The Whitgift Foundation in 1596. His aims were to provide care for the elderly and education for the young.
Some notable events in its history being
In August 1583 Queen Elizabeth I appointed John Whitgift the position Archbishop of Canterbury.
Many of the Archbishops resided at The Palace in Croydon (Old Palace School).
The Palace became a particular favourite summer retreat for John Whitgift.
It is recorded that Elizabeth I dined at Croydon Palace in August 1600.
