Testing your Fire Alarm system is a requirement of BS5839, however, we understand this can be difficult to arrange for someone to do this regularly in house, that's why we offer a weekly testing service.

In the event of a fire, you need to be confident that the system is going to activate so you can evacuate the property as quickly and as safely as possible. The weekly test ensures that the system is regularly checked, is in working order & and regularly reviewed for faults.

We make weekly testing simple

We allocate an engineer to attend your property every week, on the same day at the same time, to complete the testing requirements listed in the standard. No need to contact us every week to attend, we will be there for you.

Where possible, we use the same engineer every week so they get to learn and understand how your system and property operates, allowing them to quickly and efficiently spot any issues that may arise.

What is the process of weekly testing?

What is the process of weekly testing?

  • Our engineer will liaise with the Responsible Person and ask them to advise building occupants that a weekly test is about to take place.
  • The Fire Alarm Panel will be checked to confirm there are no faults.
  • If Monitored, the system will be placed on the test function.
  • A Manual Call Point will be activated.
  • Our engineer will wait to confirm the sounders activate, and will let them run for around a minute.
  • The Fire Alarm Panel will be reviewed to ensure the activated call point address and the zone is correct as per the zone chart and records.
  • The Manual Call Point will be re-set.
  • The fire alarm system will be silenced and ensure the system is fault and fire condition free (IE back to normal condition).
  • If Monitored, the system will be removed from the test function.
  • The test will be recorded in the logbook.
  • A work report sheet will be completed and left with the responsible person.

Fire Alarm Weekly Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) section is designed to help you with your Fire Alarm Weekly Testing queries, however, please feel free to contact us if you would like more detailed information or your question is not listed.

Under the specification in BS5839-1: 2017 it is required that the system is tested weekly. This test is designed to ensure that the system is consistently monitored to ensure it operates as required when expected.

Every week, a different manual call point should be operated during normal working hours. A different manual call point should be used at the time of every weekly test, so that all manual call points in the building are tested in rotation over a prolonged period of time.

It should be confirmed that the Fire Alarm Panel is capable of processing a fire alarm signal and providing a signal to fire alarm sounders. We also ensure that the fire alarm signal is correctly received at any line monitoring service installed (where applicable) to which fire alarm signals are transmitted.

In Short, No.

It can be any competent person who completes the weekly test and the process can be quite a simple task dependant on the system.

However, the issue with completing weekly tests in the house is when a fault appears on the system or it does not activate as expected and this is when the real benefit of having a fully trained engineer attend the site becomes a worthwhile decision. We also take the inconvenience out of ensuring a person is at the property on a weekly basis, at the same time every week, making the process much easier.

We couldnt answer this question in a short form FAQ section, so we created a blog post:

Weekly Fire Alarm Testing - Why is it important and what do I need to do?

The information provided in the FAQ's section was correct at the time of writing. Although we always strive to keep this up to date, legislation/standards are frequently updated. This section should not be used as legal guidance and or reference.

If you have any questions which are not covered above, please get in touch, let us know and we will be happy to assist.
