Emergency Lighting Maintenance Across Canterbury

Supporting Historic Buildings, Commercial Premises and Modern Developments

Canterbury's city centre combines centuries of history with a thriving commercial environment, where businesses, hospitality venues and public buildings sit alongside internationally recognised landmarks such as Canterbury Cathedral. Many of these properties experience high visitor numbers throughout the year, making dependable emergency lighting essential for supporting safe evacuation and protecting occupants.

The city is also home to major educational institutions, including the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, together with schools, healthcare facilities and community buildings that accommodate thousands of students, staff and visitors each day. Regular emergency lighting maintenance helps these occupied environments maintain reliable life safety systems and support ongoing compliance.

Beyond the historic centre, areas including Wincheap, Sturry and Thanington continue to grow with new housing, commercial premises and mixed-use developments. FAQs About Emergency Lighting Maintenance in Canterbury

Helpful Information for Responsible Persons and Building Managers

If you're responsible for maintaining emergency lighting within your building, it's important to understand what's required to keep your system compliant and reliable. Below are answers to some of the questions we are most commonly asked about emergency lighting maintenance and testing.

Our maintenance visits include functional testing, battery performance assessments, inspection of emergency luminaires, charging equipment checks, identification of faults and completion of maintenance documentation to support your compliance records.

BS 5266 recommends monthly function testing together with an annual full-duration discharge test. These inspections help verify that emergency luminaires, batteries and charging systems continue to operate effectively.

If faults are discovered, we will clearly explain the issues and provide practical recommendations to help restore your emergency lighting system to full operational condition as efficiently as possible.

Where emergency lighting has been installed and deemed necessary through the fire risk assessment, legislation requires it to be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair. Failure to do so may result in non-compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Annual testing requires the emergency lighting system to operate on battery power for a three-hour discharge period in accordance with BS 5266. Including setup, inspection and reporting, testing generally takes a minimum of around three and a half hours, although larger or more complex buildings may require additional time depending on the size of the installation.
