Fire Door Inspections for Care Homes

Professional Fire Door Inspections for Care Homes

Fire doors are a vital component of passive fire protection within care homes, helping to contain fire and smoke and protect residents, staff and visitors. In a care environment, fire doors may be subject to frequent use, assisted evacuation arrangements and regular movement of equipment, all of which can contribute to damage or deterioration. Regular expert inspection helps identify defects before they affect the intended performance of these critical fire safety measures.

At Safe I.S., we provide comprehensive fire door inspections for care homes, supporting care providers, owners, landlords, managers and other Responsible Persons. Our specialist inspectors systematically examine fire doors and their components, identifying issues such as damaged door leaves, defective closers, missing seals, excessive gaps and problems with hinges, latches or other hardware. We provide clear recommendations to help you prioritise remedial action and maintain effective passive fire protection.

Our fire door inspectors are members of the National Association of Fire Door Inspectors (NAFDI), demonstrating our commitment to professional standards within the specialist fire door inspection industry. Every inspection is supported by detailed electronic reporting and photographic evidence, giving you a clear record of the condition of the inspected fire doors.

Care Home Fire Door Inspection FAQs

Practical Guidance for Care Providers and Responsible Persons

Here are answers to some common questions.

Safe I.S. recommends fire door inspections at least every six months in accordance with BS 9999. The appropriate inspection frequency should also reflect the building, its use and the level of traffic or wear experienced by the doors. More frequent checks may be appropriate where doors are subject to particularly intensive use or increased risk of damage.

Fire doors form an important part of passive fire protection and can help contain fire and smoke between different areas of a building. Care homes may also have residents who require assistance to evacuate, making effective compartmentation and fire safety arrangements particularly important.

Our inspectors examine the door leaf and frame, hinges, self-closing devices, latches, locks, intumescent and smoke seals, gaps, glazing, signage and relevant apertures. The overall condition and functionality of the fire door are also considered.

The scope can include fire doors throughout the premises, including doors serving bedrooms, corridors, stairways, communal areas, staff areas and other relevant locations. The precise scope will depend on the building and the requirements of the Responsible Person.

The defect will be documented in the inspection report with photographic evidence and a recommendation for appropriate remedial action. Depending on the nature of the defect, this may involve adjustment, repair, replacement of components or replacement of the door assembly.

A typical fire door inspection takes around 10–15 minutes per door, although the duration can vary depending on the door's condition, complexity and accessibility. The overall time required will depend on the number of doors being inspected.
