Fire Door Inspections for Colleges

Expert Fire Door Inspections for College Buildings

Fire doors are an essential part of passive fire protection within college buildings, helping to contain fire and smoke and protect escape routes for students, staff, visitors and contractors. Colleges can contain classrooms, lecture spaces, laboratories, workshops, libraries, offices, catering facilities and residential accommodation, creating a varied environment where fire doors can experience substantial daily use. Regular professional inspection helps identify defects, damage and deterioration before they compromise the intended performance of these critical safety measures.

At Safe I.S., we provide comprehensive fire door inspections for colleges, supporting education providers, estates teams, facilities managers, landlords and other Responsible Persons. Our specialist inspectors systematically assess fire doors and their associated components, identifying issues such as damaged door leaves, defective closers, missing seals, excessive gaps and problems with hinges, latches or other hardware. We provide clear recommendations to help you understand the condition of your fire doors and prioritise appropriate remedial work.

Safe I.S. is a member of the National Association of Fire Door Inspectors (NAFDI), demonstrating our commitment to professional standards within the specialist fire door inspection industry. Our detailed inspection reports provide a clear record of findings and recommended actions, supporting effective fire door management across college premises.

College Fire Door Inspection FAQs

Practical Guidance for Education Providers and Responsible Persons

Here are answers to some common questions.

Fire doors can help contain fire and smoke, maintain compartmentation and protect escape routes. Colleges experience high levels of daily occupancy and movement, which can contribute to wear and accidental damage, making regular inspection an important part of fire door management.

The appropriate inspection frequency should reflect the building, how it is used and the level of traffic and wear experienced by the doors. Fire doors subject to intensive use may require more frequent attention than those in less heavily trafficked areas.

Our inspectors assess the door leaf and frame, hinges, latches, locks, self-closing devices, intumescent and smoke seals, gaps, glazing and other relevant components. We also consider the overall condition and operation of each inspected door.

Fire doors may be found throughout teaching areas, corridors, stairways, lecture spaces, offices, libraries, workshops, laboratories, catering areas, storage facilities and other parts of a college. The inspection scope can be tailored to the building and the requirements of the Responsible Person.

Identified defects are recorded within the inspection report together with recommendations for appropriate remedial action. Depending on the issue, this could involve adjustment, repair, replacement of components or replacement of the door assembly.

A typical fire door inspection takes around 10–15 minutes per door, although the duration can vary depending on the door's condition, complexity and accessibility. The total time required will depend on the number of doors being inspected.
