Fire Door Inspections for Schools

Specialist Fire Door Safety for Busy Education Environments

Fire doors are an important part of passive fire protection within schools, helping to contain fire and smoke and protect pupils, staff and visitors while supporting safe evacuation. Education buildings can experience substantial daily use, with doors repeatedly opened and closed throughout lessons, break times and other activities. Damage, wear, alterations and poorly maintained components can all affect how a fire door performs, making regular professional inspection an important part of effective fire safety management.

At Safe I.S., we provide expert fire door inspections for schools, helping education providers and Responsible Persons understand the condition of their fire doors and address defects effectively. Our specialist inspectors assess each door and its associated components, identifying issues such as damaged door leaves, defective self-closing devices, deteriorated seals, excessive gaps and problems with hinges, latches or other hardware. We provide clear findings and practical recommendations to help you prioritise any remedial work required.

Safe I.S. is a member of the National Association of Fire Door Inspectors (NAFDI), demonstrating our commitment to recognised professional standards within the specialist fire door inspection industry. Our detailed inspection reports provide a clear record of findings and recommended actions, supporting effective fire door management across school premises.

School Fire Door Inspection FAQs

Practical Questions for Schools and Responsible Persons

Here are answers to some common questions.

The appropriate frequency depends on the building, how the doors are used and the level of traffic and wear they experience. Doors that are frequently used or particularly vulnerable to damage may need more regular inspection.

We assess the condition and operation of the door assembly, including the door leaf, frame, hinges, latches, self-closing devices, seals, gaps, glazing and other relevant components.

The defect is recorded within the inspection report with a recommendation for appropriate remedial action. Depending on the issue, this may involve adjustment, repair, replacement of components or replacement of the door assembly.

A typical individual inspection takes around 10–15 minutes, although this can vary according to the condition, complexity and accessibility of the door. The total inspection time depends on the number of doors included.

The report sets out the condition of the inspected fire doors, identifies defects and provides recommendations for remedial action. It gives Responsible Persons a clear record to support ongoing maintenance and fire door management.

Safe I.S. combines specialist fire door inspection expertise with extensive fire safety experience and NAFDI membership. We provide systematic inspections, clear reporting and practical recommendations to help schools maintain effective fire door safety.
