As part of this scheme, BAFE and its licensed certification bodies regularly inspect SAFE I.S.'s records, procedures, and a random selection of client properties to ensure all assessments meet the required legal and technical standards.

BAFE is the independent registration body for third-party certified fire protection companies across the UK, maintaining a national register of quality fire safety service providers. This accreditation specifically recognises SAFE I.S.'s competency and adherence to the stringent requirements for conducting thorough and compliant fire risk assessments.

Institute of Fire Safety Manager, National Fire Risk Assessors Register (NFRAR)

The National Fire Risk Assessors Register (NFRAR) is a national, publicly available register of competent fire risk assessors whose qualifications have been independently verified against a defined industry standard. As a Responsible Person or duty-holder, you can use the official NFRAR website to check registered assessors and their declared competence level before commissioning a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA).

NFRAR recognises three competence levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, which correspond to the complexity and risk profile of the buildings each assessor is qualified to assess.

To achieve registration, assessors must provide supporting evidence, including recent FRAs, maintain appropriate Continuing Professional Development (CPD), hold suitable professional indemnity or public liability insurance, and meet professional conduct requirements.

1. Is a fire risk assessment a legal requirement for supported living accommodation?

Where the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies, the Responsible Person must carry out and regularly review an appropriate fire risk assessment and implement appropriate fire safety measures. The assessment should reflect the specific characteristics of the accommodation and the people at risk.

2. Who is responsible for fire safety in supported living accommodation?

Responsibility depends on the circumstances and management structure of the property. The Responsible Person may include an employer, owner, landlord or another person with control of the premises. Where housing and support responsibilities are divided between different organisations, duties should be clearly established and coordinated.

3. How are residents' individual needs considered during the assessment?

The assessment considers relevant characteristics of the people at risk, including factors that may affect their ability to recognise a fire, respond to an alarm, reach an exit or evacuate independently. The specific circumstances of the residents and accommodation are considered rather than applying a generic approach.

4. What fire safety measures are reviewed?

The assessment can consider means of escape, fire doors, compartmentation, fire detection and alarm systems, emergency lighting, fire-fighting equipment, signage and other precautions relevant to the identified risks.

5. How often should a supported living fire risk assessment be reviewed?

The assessment should be reviewed regularly and whenever there is reason to believe it is no longer valid or significant changes occur. Changes to residents, staffing, the building, its use or fire safety arrangements may all warrant review.

6. How long does a supported living fire risk assessment take?

The duration depends on the size, layout, number of occupants, facilities and complexity of the accommodation. Properties with multiple floors, communal facilities or more complex management arrangements may require additional assessment time. The anticipated duration can be discussed during the quotation process.
